i should have known when i called my mom for tips on frosting and she said she had no clue...we never decorated cookies growing up. i figured it was easy. buy the bag mix (i like those best), some frosting, and some colored gels for decorating.
first off, the bag mixes were all sold out. sure they were because they taste better than the refrigerator cookies. so i buy some big cream cheese frosting in squeezable pouches for the base and the only two gels they had left - orange and green. i would have liked black, but they were also sold out of that. grr. and the refrigerator mixes were 2/$4 so we went with those.
phoebe seemed pretty darn excited. i laid down some flour on the table and then used my plastic cup 'rolling pin' to spread the dough. didn't know to put flour on top of the dough, so it all stuck on my 'rolling pin.' i have to laugh since james swears we have two of everything and yet no rolling pin.
after scrambling to reassemble the dough, phoebe and i cut out our shapes - cute little pumpkins, cats, witches, ghosts, and bats. i put them close together on the pan and popped them in for the specified seven minutes. well, they came out as one ginormous fluff ball of sugar cookie. i tried to cut the shapes out and they flattened after a bit, not really into anything resembling our cutters.
and we waited for them to cool and start decorating. i pictured some nice gooey white frosting, but the pouch was hard to squeeze and very hard to get good coverage of our cookies. then to the detailing....phoebe decided to just squirt green all over her tray. and the little green/tan blob is the bite she took and then promptly spit out. she likes the plain cookies or just with white frosting, but the gel must be nasty. ugh, cookie decorating was a bust.
